    Black Raspberry - Rubus occidentalis

Black raspberries offer a delightful and delicious addition to home landscaping. Thin silvery branches spring rustically from the ground and grow textured green leaves in bunches of three. The berries ripen from bright red to a dark blue-purple during the summer months, typically peaking for harvest in June and July. These firm and sweet berries provide a wonderful summer treat to anyone who walks by and can make delectable additions to jams or baked goods. They can also attract wildlife such as birds and deer, which can bring viewing pleasure for all ages. Black raspberries can be grown in hardiness zones 5 through 8 and do best if planted where they will receive some amount of protection from spring frosts and strong winds. They should be planted in early spring in a sunny to partially shaded location with well draining soil. Bramble-like by nature, black raspberries should be pruned and trained for the best landscaping experience, and can be trained into a variety of shapes, making them a versatile option. The plants shoot out new growth each year, but proper pruning keeps them from growing quickly out of control. Training them up along a trellis or fence can make them easier to handle, make harvesting fruit easier, and can provide a nice source of height in your landscaping. Thorns along the branches could be used as an extra security feature under windows. Though height varies based on pruning and training, black raspberries typically grow to 2 to 4 feet tall. Although they fruit during the summer, black raspberries provide a landscaping feature all year long. During the winter, their branches take on a deep red hue, making a beautiful contrast to the snow. Black raspberry plants are easy to grow and maintain, making them an excellent choice for gardeners of a variety of skills.
