Blood Root Plant - Sanguinaria canadensis

Bloodroot is a spring ephemeral that appears early in the growing season. This flowering perennial thrives in hardiness zones three through seven, and is a native plant that is naturally found growing in the woodlands of the eastern Midwest.

To encourage growth, plant bloodroot in dappled shade, such as under deciduous trees. Each plant produces a single white blossom that has eight to twelve petals accompanied by a bright yellow stamen in the center. The sweetly scented flower appears in early spring and attracts bees and other pollinators to the garden.

The basal leaves wrap around the stem until the flower blossoms. The light green leaves can reach up to 6 inches in width. The leaf has distinct kidney shape with rounded lobes along the outer edges. The unfurled leaves sometimes have a blue-grey tint.

The blossom lasts for one to two weeks before the seed pod appears, while the foliage persists through early summer. The seed pod looks like a green flower bud and remains on the plant until the seeds ripen later in spring. The plants are easy to propagate through root division to create borders and ground covers, or you can plant seeds about six inches apart after the last frost of the season.

Bloodroot is a fast-growing plant that reaches an average height of 3 to 9 inches, depending on the plant's age. The plant grows well in full shade, but prefers moist, loamy soil, such as that found in rich woodland locations. In gardens, the plant prefers slightly acidic soil that is moist, well-drained and well-fertilized with an organic fertilizer.

This low-growing plant is an excellent addition to the landscape if you want to attract early spring pollinators, or as a native ground cover along pathways, stream banks or on the forest floor. The plant's small size makes it perfect for shaded corners and other out-of-the-way spaces.
