    Creeping Myrtle – Vinca minor

Creeping myrtle, also called periwinkle due to the color of the blooms, is a gorgeous plant for any area of your garden or lawn. With glossy green pairs of leaves and early to late spring blooms of blue star-shaped flowers, this plant is a wonderful addition. The blooms last for about a month and give way to the shiny leaves that almost look like a carpet of green. Creeping myrtle spreads quickly and grows from four to eight inches in height. The leaves are from ¼ to 3 ½ inches long and they seem to cascade from the vine. As the stems arch and fall over to touch the ground they root and new plants are started. This is one of the reasons this plant spreads so rapidly.

Creeping myrtle is a perfect plant for bare spots or areas under trees because they do not require a lot of sun. They will however produce more blooms in the spring when they are not in full shade. They are very low maintenance and do not climb or twine like a vine. This plant provides an elegant and sophisticated look to any garden. Gardeners love creeping myrtle because they do not require a lot of maintenance to look gorgeous.

Creeping myrtle will grow in poor soil as long as it is watered more frequently. In richer soil, the plant does not require as much water. This species of myrtle grows well in almost all areas of the US as well as abroad. It is not subject to a lot of pests or diseases which is another reason for the popularity of this plant. Because it is a low-lying plant, it is not adversely affected by wind and can tolerate moderate foot traffic from animals. This plant is a perennial and will return year after year to provide an attractive ground cover blanket.
