Flame Leaf Sumac Shrub - Rhus copallinum
This large shrub grows best in open areas. It thrives in arid, rocky areas but can grow in well-drained soil. Its dark green leaflets turn a vibrant red in the fall, while its flowers are an attractive green/yellow color. Flameleaf sumac can grow to a height of 8 to 10 feet with a spread of 20 to 30 feet.
Flame Leaf Sumac is justly named for the vivid shades of red and orange leaves seen during the fall season. Among the beautiful fall foliage, crimson red berries grow in clusters throughout the tree, further adding to the vibrant color pattern. The fruit is specific to the fall season and attracts various wildlife, especially deer and birds. These berries can even be used to make a lemony flavored tea that is rich in vitamin C. The Flame Leaf Sumac is a unique plant because it changes with the seasons, almost like having two different plants. During the summer, the plant exchanges its bright fall color pattern for tiny, delicate green-yellow flowers. These flowers sprinkled in between the plant's fern-like leaves add texture and appeal to any landscape. In addition to being appealing to the eyes, the Flame Leaf Sumac is also easy to care for. It is pest and disease free and adapts to almost any environment. Often found areas of Texas and New Mexico, this low maintenance plant can withstand variable weather conditions and is extremely heat and drought tolerant. It is also capable of growing in any well-drained soil, but is very adaptable and can grow successfully in rocky or clay soils. If a shorter, shrub-like plant is desired, it is best pruned during the winter. Even though this plant is not considered invasive, it does colonize quickly and should be planted in an area with ample space. The Flame Leaf Sumac will undoubtedly catch eyes because of its vibrant colors, which makes it a perfect addition to any lawn.
