Great Blue Lobelia - Lobelia siphilitica

Blue lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica), also called great lobelia or blue cardinal flower. As well as having strikingly beautiful colors, they also attract hummingbirds, which are a beautiful sight to behold all on their own. Blue lobelia is also an excellent food source for bees, which is an immeasurably valuable trait, as bees are endangered and essential for plant life. It should be considered that this plant, in optimal growing conditions, is known to self-seed and form colonies. While this is a beautiful thing because it is so cute and has so many great benefits, it is also something to consider when planting them to ensure that they are in a place where it is alright if they do form colonies. Blue lobelia prefers full sun to part shade but will tolerate full shade. It is also not known to have any insect problems or to be a susceptible disease--great news for anyone who is looking for a great, low-maintenance plant. These plants will look great either on their own or will other plants of the same type, especially other lobelias, which come in a dazzling array of bold colors. They are also beautiful when planted among trees, one of their natural growing sites. Blue lobelia is a lovely addition to any backyard or garden and will ship in seed form.
