Extremely Versatile Hair Cap Moss Used All Over The World

Hair cap moss - Polytrichum commune

When most people think of moss they picture a green covering lying flat to the ground, but hair cap moss can grow to heights of 12 inches to a maximum of about 27 inches. A height of 12 inches or considerably less is far more common, however.

Hair cap moss gets its names from the small “hairs” that cover the calyptra of the plant. Calyptra describes those structures which cover the stamens, carpals or even roots of plants. Suffice it to say that hair cap moss has a classic “hairy” appearance over the top of the plant. It has a bright green, cheerful appearance when young making it popular for providing covering around rock formations in gardens and other decorative landscaping uses.

It turns darker green as it matures and gets brown with advanced age.

Hair cap moss is found all over the world growing naturally in temperate areas and the forested regions of the northern hemisphere, but it also can be found in warmer climates, such as Mexico and New Zealand. It's extremely popular among gardeners in Japan.

When looked down at from above hair cap moss has a star-like appearance provided by narrow, needle-like leaves that spiral around the stems of the plant. It can be said that hair cap moss provides a "lush green carpet" when it becomes well established – it has a lifespan of 3 to 5 years.

This plant prefers lightly shaded areas in soil that is somewhat acidic, although it thrives in bright sunshine if established in soils that remain moist. A significant advantage of hair cap moss is that it can grow well in poor soils and areas that are not well drained. This makes it an safe choice for many types of gardens.

Hair cap moss is almost certainly the most popular selection for mossy covering in gardens and landscaped creations around the world.
