Pee Gee Hydrangea - H paniculata 'Grandiflora' (P. G.)
The Pee Gee hydrangea is a large, showy shrub with gorgeous flower clusters shaped like cones, rather than the typical round hydrangea bloom feature. The favorite American plant was sent from Japan in 1861. When it comes to a hydrangea plant that can handle severe weather conditions, the Pee Gee is the strongest of the bunch, standing tall against cold temperatures.
Landscapers enjoy using the Pee Gee hydrangea as a beautiful border shrub, and others have pruned the plant into a single stem, training it into a small, flowering tree. As a shrub, the Pee Gee averages a height between six and eight feet tall, but if left to grow wildly, some can spread out to 20 feet wide and 20 feet tall.
The Pee Gee hydrangea is simple to grow in moist, fertile, well-drained soil in zones 3 to 8. It prefers full sun to partial shade. The shrub thrives in mildly acidic to neutral soil. For the ultimate results, the Pee Gee hydrangea should be fed with a light fertilizer in March, May, and July.
The unusual blooms make their presence known from mid to late summer through early fall. The large flower cluster cones begin as white blooms that average from 18 inches long and 10 inches wide. As the flowers age, they turn a pretty pink, and when autumn debuts, the cones morph into a lovely shade of rust with gray-green leaves.
The Pee Gee hydrangea is an adaptable shrub, adding 25-plus inches to its growth annually. It makes for an exceptional, colorful property definer. When using them as a border, experts advise planting the shrubs 12 to 15 feet apart. The bush can also create a superb focal point for one's cottage landscape or enclosed perennial garden.
The Pee Gee hydrangea is perfect for use as cut flowers, and some people like to dry them for stunning indoor arrangements that can be appreciated year round.
