Crepe Myrtle Shrubs
The Lagerstroemia, commonly known as the crepe myrtle, is a significant shrub that blooms from mid-summer to fall, fairs well in hardiness zones 7 to 10, enjoys well-drained soil of pH 5.0 to 6.5, reaches a height of 3 feet to 30 feet, a width of up to 20 feet and, depending on the size, takes 3 to 10 years to grow.
Crepe myrtles are deciduous shrubs that offer a variety of colors to choose from, including white, pink, purple, lavender, and red. You will love the abundance of flowers each crepe myrtle offers and, with the exceptionally long blooming season, these colors will be present for up to three months at a time. Even the bark provides terrific color accents. In the winter, the bark of the crepe myrtle peels away to leave behind an attractive mottled coloration. They are tolerant of tight spaces and larger varieties, such as the red rocket and Natchez crepe myrtle, can be used to provide a property privacy when grown about 10 feet apart.
If you are going for white blooms, the Natchez crepe myrtle is an excellent choice. Reaching a height of up to 30 feet, its blossoms are up to a foot in length. This crepe myrtle has a vibrant variation of bark color when the bark peels away. In the fall, the leaves change to a lovely red-orange and stand out nicely with the white flowers.
For dark pink to red blooms, the red rocket is a great bet. Its flowers start out a lighter pink and end up a deep red. They are also about a foot in length and the foliage that compliments the blooms is a deep green, providing a striking contrast. Also, the red rocket is a drought resistant plant, making it an excellent choice for drier climates.
There are also many other crepe myrtles that offer blooms in lavender and purple. Since they also vary in size, from shrub to that of a small tree, there is a crepe myrtle to fit any size of the garden. The crepe myrtle makes a beautiful and showy piece for any landscape.
