Purple Crepe Myrtle - Lagerstroemia indica

Purple Crepe Myrtle is known for its vibrant, crepe-papery petals, these plants are just as lovely even when leafless during the winter due to an attractively smooth, grey bark and ornamental branches, offering year-round landscape appeal. As dependable as they are elegant, once established they have excellent heat, humidity, and drought tolerance so they thrive in warm, sunny climates. The crepe myrtle is not a delicate plant by any means, however. It can grow in partial shade, though with access to full sunlight, it will flower more profusely and transform into a breathtaking showpiece of summer colors. These trees should be planted in slightly acidic soil, but are mostly receptive to all soil types. It is best for the soil to be moist and well drained. Some care should be taken in saline conditions as well as these plants have low salt tolerance. Otherwise, these sturdy beauties only need to be placed in an area with good air circulation to avoid any potential problems with mildew or disease. Crepe myrtles should grow in Hardiness Zones 7–10, and have a fast growth rate at 24 inches per year. Tall and graceful at maturity, this vase-shaped tree reaches heights of around 18-25 feet tall, while if pruned and grown as a shrub about 10-12 feet. A relentless bloomer all summer long, it will flower with abundant, brilliant panicles before its leaves color and eventually drop off in the fall. These versatile trees have fragrant flowers, gorgeous autumnal colors, uniquely ruffled petals, and an alluring bark. They also provide plenty of outdoor interest and transplant easily. Stunning as a yard focal point or planted together for a charming deciduous hedge, they will look great in any garden or landscape.
