The Red Twig Dogwood Shrub is botanically known as Cornus sericea and grows well in zones 3 through 8. This is a deciduous rapid growing shrub that grows to a height of 6 to 9 feet with a width of 8 to 12 feet. The shrub grows best in organically rich moist soil and full sun. Though, it can be tolerant of other soils that retain water like bog or swamp conditions. It is also a shrub that will adapt to hot and cold weather extremes that can withstand the colder temperatures in some U.S. states. The shrub is hearty and with weekly watering is easily grown. This shrub has red tinted multi-stemmed trunks and branches with variegated leaves of a greenish gray that are white edged. This is a shrub that gets yellowish-white blooms and small blue berries that bloom in the spring and in summer the berries remain. In the cool weather, the leaves fall from the bush leaving the attractive coral-red stems throughout the winter. The root system will encourage new shrub growth. The shrub can be pruned annually if desired, but they do not require pruning for optimal growth. Pruning can be done to keep the shrub a smaller size or to promote new growth. The new growth branches will have a brighter color as it grows. If pruning is done it should be done early in the spring before the new leaves form.
This is a shrub that is pleasing to the eye year round and the branches can be cut to use in floral arrangements since they do not lose their color. It is also a shrub that can be planted as a landscape attraction, near the house, as a boarder for driveways and sidewalks or in gardens. The shrub naturally attracts butterflies and birds.
