The most useful applications for sand bar willows are as wind screens, and to reduce soil erosion in wet areas like floodplains, marshes, and along shorelines. Maintenance level for Salix interior is moderate, as they tend to sucker prolifically, so control is prudent if vast spreading is undesirable. For a wispy yet wild look in moist locations, sand bar willow live stakes are a great choice. These woody cuttings arrive ready to put right into the ground, where they will take root and begin producing foliage in short order.

Sand Bar Willow - Salix interior

The sand bar willow is a small shrub-like tree which is native throughout North America. This tree does not have the typical appearance that comes to mind when one thinks of willows. Rather, it tends to form in a thicket made up of round shrubby plants with branches that grow in a singular, upright pattern. The trunk of Salix interior is smooth and gray on young trees, the bark flaking over time as the tree ages. The branches are woody and the leaf stems thin and varying in color from gray to yellow-brown. The leaves are narrower than most willows, at one-quarter to three-eighths of an inch, and reach up to five inches in length. Their size and pointy shape create a wispy structure that lends itself to wind in a visually attractive way. The flowers appear in spring in the form of yellow to greenish catkins. These spiraling cylinders range from three-quarters of an inch to three inches, depending upon whether they’re male or female. As the common name suggests, in its natural habitat Salix interior often crops up on sandbars.
