Staghorn Sumac- Rhus typhina
The Staghorn Sumac has beautiful deep red summer berries that are nontoxic and have been used to make lemon flavored tea. These trees grow best in sandy or rocky soil and grow to heights of 15 to 25 feet. In the fall its leaves boast colors of orange, scarlet, and gold. The staghorn sumac is native to the Eastern United States. This deciduous tree is often found in shrub-like groupings with other staghorns, but can also be found growing as a single tree. The staghorn sumac propagates easily when left undisturbed, and can withstand a variety of unfavorable conditions, including rocky soil and high salt exposure.
