Wisteria Plant – Wisteria sinensis
Wisteria vine is one that lends beauty and fragrance to any space it occupies. Though it may take several years for one of these plants to blossom, it is well worth the wait. The flowers, in shades of blue, violet and white, provide lush coverage and emit an intoxicating scent during their springtime bloom.
Because the wisteria can grow up to ten feet per year, it is a popular choice for gardeners who wish to cover vast swathes of the ground. It is essential to plant these lovely vines in areas with full sun exposure. They will still experience growth with partial sunlight, but they grow more slowly and may not flower at all. This is a plant that is difficult to kill, but benefits from extensive pruning. Cutting back around half of the last year’s growth each winter will result in spectacular growth the following spring.
If your soil is particularly weak, use compost to provide the necessary nutrients. Phosphorus is also used to promote growth, so a cup or two of bone meal mixed into the soil right before the springtime bloom is a great idea for a happy, healthy plant!
